REFLECTIONS

Last Sunday’s scripture had water as a symbol.  Today’s topic is seeing.  St. John is expert in leading  us from an earthly experience into the world of the spirit. The healing of the poor blind man is but the prelude to his being granted the vision of faith.  St. Paul, elaborating on this theme, in his letter to the Christians in Ephesus, says, “Once you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk, then, as children of the light.” Rightly, we are protective of our eyesight, and seek help when it fades. But how much do we appreciate the gift of faith, of spiritual vision, given to us in baptism. When exercised, faith opens us up to the vision of a world beyond what the senses can behold. It gives us a glimpse into the life of God, and of his plans for the people he created. It enables us to see the world and people in an entirely new light. ‘O Christian, be conscious of your dignity’, Pope Leo 1 exclaimed. The true Christian is the one ‘who walks as a child of the light.’ Unwittingly, our broken and weary world longs for this leadership from us. And we are commissioned by Christ to be “the light of the world.”

Lent is a time for us to ask the serious questions, are we living up to our high calling? Are we cooperating in the great work of the Holy Spirit conforming us into the likeness of Christ? What a glorious enterprise! What a reason for living! Again, listen to St. Paul. “The night is far advanced, the day is at hand. Let us throw off the works of darkness, and put on the armor of light. Let us conduct ourselves properly as in daylight, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in promiscuity and licentiousness, not in rivalry and jealousy. But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the desires of the flesh.”

THE ALTAR SOCIETY EASTER FLOWERS

During Lent there are no flowers on the Altar in order to remind us that this is a time of prayer and penance. However, on Easter Saturday, there will be beautiful flowers and lilies to celebrate the resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. In past years we have honored our loved ones living and deceased at Easter by making a donation of flowers: An offering for Easter flowers may be made in any amount for loved ones. Please use the form from your paper bulletin or  write the information below on a piece of paper.  Write Altar Flowers on the front of your donation envelope. The list will be printed in the bulletin with the Honorees and donors names:

SCRUTINY SUNDAYS FOR THE RCIA
AND FOR EACH OF US

Our RCIA members will invite you, their Parish family, to pray for them these weeks. “Scrutiny” means to look within ourselves to find anything that keeps us from following Jesus. All of us are called to ask ourselves the same question and ask Jesus for healing. These ceremonies will take place at the 12:00 Noon Mass this Sunday, on March 22nd at the 5:30 PM Mass, and on March 29th at the 10:30 AM Mass. Let us pray for one another as we continue our Lenten journey.

TOGETHER-IN-MISSION

First results from the annual campaign are at hand.
Again, our parish goal is $85,923.47. Thus far, $48,618.25 has been pledged. $35,184.25 has been paid. This leaves us with a shortfall of $37,305.22 in pledges. Perhaps, the most worrisome fact is that, so far, ONLY 119 HOUSEHOLDS have responded, out of a total of more than 2,100. We know these are difficult times for virtually everybody. Not knowing what lies ahead, we cling to what we have. But think of the PRIESTS and SISTERS and great people who are trying to keep their churches and schools open in the inner city. Can we fail them in their hour of need? If you have not already done so, PLEASE consider making a pledge. You have an entire year to complete it. Send it here to us at Good Shepherd, 505 N. Bedford Dr., Beverly Hills, CA 90210. Be sure to mark it ‘Together-In-Mission’. Believe me, God will reward you.

GET ON THE BUS—IS BACK

Taking kids to see their incarcerated father at California Men’s Colony Prison will take place this year on June 19th, 2009. We did so well last year that this year, they have given us two buses instead of one. Already, 120 have signed up to go. As you know, the base cost of the buses are $4,000 each. I am also looking for family volunteers-you would meet the caregiver and fill out the paper work for the prison, donations for the snacks and supplies on the buses-kids eat a lot of snacks, donations for the breakfast at 4:00 AM on June19th, volunteers to help that morning by serving breakfast-signing families in-loading the buses with supplies and snacks greeting the families and making them feel welcome.

Please contact Lynn Slotsve
at lslotsve@sbcglobal.net or (323) 459-9919 if you can help. Please also pick up an envelope located by the entrance to the church if you can help.  I thank you in advance for your generosity and support.
